One of the summer's most thankless transfer sagas is that of Robin van Persie. Heannounced on his personal website that he would not be renewing his contract, yet he is still an Arsenal employee less than a week before the season starts.

According to Roberto Mancini, Manchester City are out of the race, while Sir Alex Ferguson admits negotiations with the Gunners are far from easy.

He's still technically club captain, but surely he won't continue? Should he leave, his reception on return to the Emirates Stadium would be raucous. Would it be any different if he ends up staying?
